Announcing: Typst for Automated Reports

Last week I gave a talk in front of like 50 actuaries who mostly deal with Excel to wrangle data. My task was to show them the tools of the trade that data scientists like to use to wrangle data. So naturally this meant talking about programming to an audience that isn’t too keen about programming (as they mostly use Excel.)

Luckily for me I had a special treat with me. You see, I also had slides about Typst. Now, you may wonder why would a non-programmer audience suddenly be excited about Typst!?

But here’s the thing: I didn’t just talk about Typst. What I actually talked about was automating reports using Typst combined with R or Python.

As you’d expect, everyone in the room was familiar with the process of

• crunching numbers,

• copying that over to Word,

• and then printing that as a PDF.

And of course everyone knows how annoying and error prone this process is.

So that’s why I could see so many people become excited about the promise to automatically generate reports from data. Especially after I showed them that this PDF is also generated automatically:

That’s the power of Typst. Not only can it generate PDFs, it can also baffle a non-programmer audience with its skills for working with data and automating tedious processes. How cool is that?
